Gathering Moss

The clouds unfold from the mountain creases. They drifted in silently during the night, I noticed them when I walked late last evening. It smells damp and fresh, the leaves scatter in front of me as though its autumn, but it isn't.There is moss beneath the pine trees trapped there by dampness encouraged by nurturing shade and a regular watering system. There is no sun yet and the air is chilly.

As I watch the mountains it seems as though I'm back home watching the table cloth drape over Table Mountain as the south easter blows. How easily smells and sounds transport us effortlessly back to where we once were. My mind drifts back and I am walking alongside the river, long grass clinging to my jeans, my shoes damp with early morning moisture. Another dog, a riverside..another regular path.

I've lived a lifetime since then, moved mountains, cried rivers, seen and lived in places I never thought I would. I'm still not quite sure if it's living a dream, or survival? I feel sometimes as though I have been swept up by life with very little say in the matter, choice is sometimes a cruel word. We have it but not much of it is free, we are bound by love and our hearts and our responsibilities, doing the right thing, and saying I have a choice not to accept this seems of little consequence.

The sun peeps through the heavy shade of the mimosa trees as I reach home, there is coffee waiting and a chance to wriggle my feet and warm my damp toes in the dubious warmth of a few sun speckles. Tomorrow we drive up to Pismo Beach to try out our new beach recliners and look for sand dollars, meet up with my sister and my nephews, and I shall laugh and get a little sunburnt and I wont think too much.

How ridiculous then that I yearn to be in the cold African winter with children pulling me in all directions, drinking tea with my daughter in her kitchen out of my grandmothers Royal Doulton tea cups.

I've come to realize

Stolen unashamedly from Matt:

1. I've come to realize that my legs...need to hit the road or a treadmill sometime soon

2. Ive come to realize that my job.. is just a job and that I probably wont stay here much longer

3. I've come to realize that when I'm driving...my mind is writing blogs

4. I've come to realize that I need...a place to call my own, Ive travelled to far to often and right now I just want a home.

5. I’ve come to realize that I have lost...more friends than Ive made, with my travelling. I'm never in one place long enough to make too many deep friendships, but those i do follow me to the ends of the world..

6. I've come to realize that I hate it when...we argue, because you are the worst arguer in history and to you its about winning and solving the problem

7. I've come to realize that if I'm drunk...(never been really drunk) but one should neverrr text and drink!

8. I've come to realize that money..makes the USA go round

9. I've come to realize that certain people..are not what they seem no matter how well you think you know them. And that some people are more much, and that w will always be surprised

10. I've come to realize that I'll always be...yearning to be somewhere else

11. I've come to realize that I have a crush on… my dog..(and its reciprocal which is good!)

12. I've come to realize that my mom...is getting old

13. I've come to realize that my cell phone is...my umbilical cord to my children

14. I've come to realize that when I woke up this morning...I was well rested

15. I've come to realize that last night before I went to sleep...I cried a bucket

16. I've come to realize that right now I am thinking about...going home for good

17. I've come to realize that my dad...was and is my icon

18. I've come to realize that when I get on Multiply...its much like coming home

19. I've come to realize that today…I'm going to slap on some sunscreen and lie in the sun, and pretend I'm on Clifton Beach and not on my balcony

20. I've come to realize that tonight...it will be cold and I will get to wear sweats, and I will probably sleep alone

21. I've come to realize that tomorrow...I will wake alone, and then do laundry, walk my dog and maybe go down to the flea market along the pier..

22. I've come to realize that I really want to....do anything but be nurse (but tomorrow that thought may change)

A Shutter-load of Memories

The past few weeks have been crazy.

When it comes to creativity, my job is sucking me dry right now! I get home exhausted, too tired to write too tired to think further than to stuff a load of laundry into the washing machine. The fact that I very often forget that I have and leave it there for a couple of days and then wonder why the scrubs I needed yesterday are still crumpled and damp and lonely at the bottomless pit of washing machine hell, tomorrow!

I seem to have worked an endless week of 12 hr shifts (1 day off in 8 by the end of it) in an environment which is both stressful, lonely and while not un-friendly not quite friendly either. Today I had my long awaited well deserved meltdown ( it wasn't pretty and involved a LOT of moisture).

Orientation to the new is difficult enough especially when you've done it all before, especially hard when you're foreign and perhaps a little older than the majority of the workforce, harder too when you've been pushed into the situation by a set of circumstances far beyond your control or understanding, made impossible when it is by folk who don't appreciate the level of expertise we all bring to the unit, and insist on either giving us more responsibility in a new environment than we are truly ready for, and taking away that responsibility completely and making us feel like idiots! Thrown into the mix I had 2 day shifts to contend with in the middle of my night shifts which has really thrown my sleep patterns out of whack, and was probably the cause of my little hissy fit this morning.

When I got home I really needed to walk and breathe some fresh (very pollinated) air, so we took off with dog in tow for a hike up to

The which are in the nearby hills on the outskirts of Solvang.

We parked the car at the bottom of the trail and made our way up underneath the canopy of green,

across bridges and

past trees gnarled by time and many years of extreme weather...such amazing shapes.

We laughed so at Senga chasing cheeky squirrels as they danced and teased in the treetops.

The river was little more than a trickle and so I was totally unprepared for this..

and just how beautiful the falls would be. We sat in silence for absolute ages just soaking in the peace and quiet absorbing the fresh forest smells, eventually stirring just long enough to capture a shutter-load of memories.

In the late afternoon we drove home through the countryside, past the skittish deer and stopped near the river to watch some children skip stones in the river

then we climbed out onto the bridge and watched the sunset over the Santa Ynez river, and then had a slow drive home

my soul restored and feeling a whole lot more peaceful.

Daisy

She walked into the classroom, brazenly, the gap between her sweatpants and her t-shirt allowing her brown swollen belly an easy means of escape. Her heavy hair swung across her back, her face glowed with health and confidence. A new found peace? I found myself lowering my head, unable to meet her gaze. I noticed absent minded-ly how white my knuckles were and slowly released my grip on the table as she slipped her backpack over her chair and settled clumsily into the chair. A handsome hunk walked past her and ruffled her hair playfully. I turned to write something inane on the board.

Her name is Daisy I am told in a short text message. I stand at the hospital window in the rain, feeling the drizzle hit my face mingling with my tears until I'm not sure which is rain and which is not. The light inside fills the room with a surreal light, after labouring for a day and a night you are clearly exhausted. You arm is draped protectively across your daughter and as the sob catches in my throat your eyes fly open as if some primeval bond has alerted you to my pain.

Your eyes do not waver from the board, you sit through the class even though you were probably in labour all that day. Your friends are caring, carrying your bag from class to class, they pull back your chair in the dining room. They rub your back between lessons. Someone combs your hair and fetches you a drink. I should have known. Mostly I just wish you would just go home, or to the hospital, anywhere but not here.

Your eyes search the room, glance through the large paned window into the darkness beyond. You see nothing but the rain against the window, you hear nothing but the wind through the bare leafed winter trees. My heart is filled to bursting as I watch the woman I love lean forward and offer my daughter her swollen breast. I want to sit on the edge of the bed and stroke her forehead, and give her tea. I want to tell her to hold the baby like this, I want to tell her what a remarkable woman she is, but I do none of that.

I turn from the regret I feel engulfing me and shrink back into the night, back into reality. And my wife.

Today

We had another full day of lectures today, all a bit tedious and exceedingly boring as it's subject matter we oldies have been dealing with for years and years. On and on it went in a stifling hot room with little to no ventilation.

Rosi kind of summed up how we were all feeling.

While the girls all got together for drinks and dinner, I had a quick latte with Rosi and then headed home

Just in time to watch the deer in the twilight

and the moon rise

over an almost dry river bed

Meeting Maggie

Last week, on one of the hottest days of the summer, Maggie (magrose) and I met up in Solvang. She is from Canada, down here in California for the summer so we grabbed at the chance of sharing ice cream cones/snowcones and having a good old natter, while the girls took some flattering snaps for prosperity.
It was so good meet you Maggie, we will certainly do this again, kindred spirits with so much in common, we barely paused for breath!! Im just sorry that time was short...hoping to see you and your truly delightful children again soon!!!
Senga who loooves children, was in puppy heaven
and soon decided, that Elizabeth in particular, needed a good face wash!!
Elizabeth was a pushover....

Picture Perfects Birthday!

I found this from last year on Yahoo360. I think the first post was with the theme Refrigerator and then The Road was the 2nd...So here you are a blast from the past so to speak!!
oOo
Welcome to Picture Perfect. Each week I will post a theme in my blast, and each Friday you get to post your photos on your own sites. Feel free to post a link on my page in the comment box below so that everyone can link to your pages and view your pictures. A brief despription and the type of camera you used an optional extra!
Its a fun exercise, no voting no prizes and no one winner, just a chance to show your creativity and enjoy a general camaraderie. I have it on good authority though, that drinking margaritas and consuming chocolate during photo taking will increase creativity substantially.
Have fun out there!
ooo0ooo
When I started looking through my photo files of road pictures, I was astounded at how many I had. I have driven diagonally across country from the east to the west coast and am well known for my driveby shootings!! I must have hundreds !
I finally decided on this Tucson picture, taken in Sabino Canyon during one of our many early morning walks. It overlooks the valley with the Catalina Mountains in the distance.
Special wonderful memories.

Hi! nice to meet you. That's a beautiful photo you chose - I love the outline of those mountains. They surprised me because the outlying land is so flat.
The photo I took is almost the complete opposite of yours weatherwise. It's called "Sudden Blizzard" and I was driving along when all of a sudden I was enveloped by a blast of wind and snow. It's something we live with up here in upstate NY in the winter time. Looking at this photo makes me cool down :-)
