My heart gets caught in the whirl
it’s whipped around
until its garish and raw
reluctantly I am forced to
feel the emptiness invade
aloof and cold as your shoulder
Memories prod me painfully
as emotions careen randomly
feeling ridiculously like pressured air rushing
through the blunt blades
of an old tin windmill
Eventually it empties
more quietly than I
ever would have imagined
gentle clarified memories remain
and so,
tentatively, I allow your face to echo
all the old familiar places in me
somewhat distorted
by the smoked mirror of love
Perhaps there only to remind me,
lest even the softest
parts of me forget,
all the obscure reasons why
you refused to stay
